“Who will dare say he has defined art?”
Words are ambiguous. Definitions are difficult. Yet, to arrive a solution, context is key. One such word that often receives defining, yet little context, is art.
As an art student myself, I have been asked the question "What is art?" more times than I care to admit. Each time, it makes a fiery debate in the classroom, often with peers asking for context. I do as well, but I also ask for connection between the context and the given meaning.
With that in mind, I decided to seek out definitions while providing context, thereby creating a connection. In order to do so, I first photographed the open hands of artists. Afterwards, I shot their hands with their chosen tool of expression and later a close-up portrait of their face. Once all photos were taken, I recorded their definition of art and assembled all elements together.
The further I delve into this project, the more I realize how ambiguous the word art is. However, I believe there is beauty in that and it will allow more answers to arise. After all, I define art as an excellent means to express an extension of yourself… Like a voice. Therefore good art commences, continues, or contributes to a conversation… Like a voice. So if that means more voices will emerge, I am most certainly eager to listen!
